Just behind Game of Thrones was true crime anthology The People v. O.J. Simpson with 22 nominations, Fargo with 23, Veep with 17, Saturday Night Live with 16, House Of Cards with 13, The Night Manager with 12. Finally, amongst other things the GoT production is looking forward to, aside from the number of wins they make, is whether they will win the coveted Outstanding Drama Series again or will another show takes the title.
Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba, Cuba Gooding Jr, Tom Hiddleston and Courtney B. Vance were also nominated while other big name contenders in the category including Bill Murray and Johnny Depp missed out.
The fifth season of American Horror Story: Hotel scored eight nominations including nominations for its stars Sarah Paulson and Kathy Bates for their supporting work on the series.
GoT has also bagged nods for writers DB Weiss and David Benioff, as also for direction, cinematography, casting, costume, sound editing, visual effects and make-up in the non-prosthetic and prosthetic categories.
In contrast with this year’s Oscars, which became embroiled in controversy over the lack of nominations for minority actors, Emmy nominations provided a wealth of recognition for minorities, particularly African Americans. Besides Peter Dinklage, Emilia Clarke and Lena Headey who have already received nominations in the previous editions of Emmys, new talented actors Kit Harrington and Maisie Williams have also joined the queue with first-time nominations this year.
Elba, who is now starring in the Hollywood blockbuster Star Trek Beyond, said he planned to celebrate his Emmy nomination with a trip to the pub. “I could not be more humbled”.
“It is a serious understatement to say that I am somewhat stunned”, Harington said of his nomination.
Who got snubbed? Some of the folks from “Downton Abbey”, “American Idol” in the Reality-Competition series category; Christian Slater in “Mr. Robot”; Julianna Margulies in “The Good Wife”; the actors in “The Big Bang Theory”; “The Last Man on Earth”, which only got one nod (for actor Will Forte); Lady Gaga for “American Horror Story: Hotel”; “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”.
And even Jerry Seinfeld’s online show on Crackle is up for “outstanding variety talk series”.
After being looked over for far too long, The Americans walked away with five nominations including its first-ever nomination for Outstanding Drama Series and first-ever lead actor nominations for stars Matthew Rhys and Keri Russell.
Sherlock: The Abominable Bride (Masterpiece) and Luther are nominated for outstanding television movie.
