In his final monologue, Stewart thanked colleagues, fans and family.
“We owe you, because we learned from you”, Colbert told Stewart. “All of us who were lucky enough to work with you for 16 years were better because we got to watch you do your show”.
On Thursday, Stewart hosted his last episode of The Daily Show and what a flawless farewell it was.
“You’re finally getting cancelled, Jon”, Kilborn said. “It’s been the honor of my professional life, and I thank you for watching it, for hate-watching it, whatever reason you are tuning in for”.
They laced their farewells with some barbs.
In a pretaped segment, Stewart took viewers behind the scenes. He then ended the night by refusing to say goodbye and thanking his family for showing him what joy is and added that he is going for a drink. “He did it seriously and he also had some humor with it, which you expect from Colbert”, Pergament said. “My moment of zen”.

Of note: former correspondent Wyatt Cenac had a brief, intentionally awkward conversation with Stewart.
