Republican Donald Trump calls his VP pick a party unifier
In a Fox News interview on Thursday night, Trump said Pence had done a great job in IN and that of all the people he had interviewed for the job, “there’s nobody that agrees with me fully on everything”.

Trump had faced a midday Friday deadline to announce Pence because the governor had to declare by then whether he would be on the ballot in his home state for re-election.
“He’s a good pick”, said Barrie Ciliberti, a delegate from Urbana. “He’s been a good governor, fiscally and socially conservative”. He takes care of a few boxes with that selection. The early birds were there an hour before the “welcome home rally” was scheduled to start. “Americans can choose a leader who will fight to make America safe and prosperous again, and bring real change, or we can elect someone who literally personifies the failed establishment in Washington D.C”. Instead, Pence, under pressure from national conservatives, tepidly endorsed Trump’s rival, Texas Sen.
For his part, Pence chose not to directly comment on the tenor of Trump’s campaign so far.
“For the sake of our security, for the sake of our prosperity, for the sake of a Supreme Court that will never turn its back on our God-given liberties”, Pence said. “But it was more of an endorsement for me”.
Saturday’s event in a New York City hotel ballroom had few of the traditional hallmarks of what is arguably one of the most important decisions for a presidential candidate. “Many of my fellow Cruz campaigners are still somewhat wary of him”. Where Trump makes conservatives suspicious, Pence has credibility.
Trump spent weeks weighing vice presidential contenders, including former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and New Jersey Gov. Jeff Sessions of Alabama and retired Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn.
USA presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump (4th, left) and his running mate Indiana Governor Mike Pence (3rd, left) are joined by their families on stage during a campaign event in NY, the United States, July 16, 2016.
Pence also has been critical of Trump’s proposed temporary ban on foreign Muslims entering the United States, calling the idea “offensive and unconstitutional”. She said the running mate knows how to bring people together. Still, he said it was instructive that Trump “can be influenced against what his instincts tell him”.
“Back to Mike Pence”, Trump said, interrupting himself during a lengthy explanation about why evangelical voters support his candidacy.
Delegate John Stricklett, from the 8th congressional district, said Pence does not now disagree with Trump.
An April 2016 Gallup poll showed that 70 percent of women have an unfavorable opinion of Trump, giving him a larger gender gap than any other candidate.
Americans have seen awkward announcements in which presidential candidates have introduced their running mates.
“But, Collins said, “(Trump) is a smart man.
“I think it’s amusing”, he said.
Trump has become known for his bold statements and extreme positions – such as building a wall along the US southern border to control immigration – and for belittling opponents. Trump conceded that one of the reasons he’d selected Pence was to promote unity within the Republican Party, left deeply fractured by Trump’s ascent.
While Trump showcases his choice, Democrat Hillary Clinton’s team is already painting Pence’s conservative social viewpoints as out of step with the mainstream.
“This law attempted to do exactly what Supreme Court precedent said could not be done: invade a woman’s privacy rights by preventing her from deciding whether to obtain a pre-viability abortion”, Ken Falk, the legal director of the Indiana ACLU, said in a statement.
