But Kerry said Turkey’s government would first have to prove Gulen’s role in the failed effort by elements of the country’s military to oust President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Turkey has so far detained 6,000 people over Friday’s failed coup, Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag has said.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan has been fairly quiet throughout the entire coup, but Turkish leadership has suggested the demonstration was unsuccessful and is “largely under control”.

Gulen is a well-known Islamic scholar and political insider who has been living in exile in the USA state of Pennsylvania for the past few years.

Mr Gulen, 75, was once a close ally of Mr Erdogan but the two fell out in recent years as Mr Erdogan became suspicious of Mr Gulen’s movement, Hizmet, and its powerful presence in Turkish society – including the media, police and judiciary.

“The people of Turkey deserve to be complimented for coming out into the streets and facing military tanks and artillery with bare hands to force the coup makers run”, Bilawal said in a statement.

Kerry also promised U.S. support in probing the putsch in a phone call with Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, according to State Department spokesman John Kirby.

Greece arrested the eight men after they landed and an official said they will appear before a Greek prosecutor on Sunday.

The President has come out strongly against those involved in the coup, ordering the arrest of nearly 3000 prosecutors and judges believed to have played a part in the overnight action.

US-Turkish tensions have grown after government forces put down an attempted coup on Friday night.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg shared a tweet confirming all NATO personnel in Turkey remained safe.

Turkey and the United States were North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies in fighting terrorism, but the relations between the two have become tricky since Turkey recently repaired its relationship with Moscow, as Erdogan issued an apology to Russian President Vladimir Putin last month for shooting down a Russian warplane last fall.
