For this project, Feig and co-writer Katie Dippold dropped the engine behind comedies such as The Heat (2013), Spy (2015) and Bridesmaids: insecurity.
The four women slowly build up to the point where they can actively defeat the ghosts – they have to test their equipment, after all, and it’s not all immediately functional. Furiously, she goes to complain to Abby, only to be told: “That book was our baby and you abandoned our baby”.
The new ghost-busting team is made up of Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones. I thought her the weakest link, her acting consisting of little more than ludicrous gurning. Instead there is a clumsy coming-together of old pals Erin and Abby (Wiig and McCarthy), the introduction of nerdy science genius Jillian (McKinnon) and a welcoming for blue-collar enthusiast Patty (Jones).
Speaking of eye candy, Chris Hemsworth (most well-known for playing superhero Thor) proves to be more than just window dressing, becoming a surprising source of laughs as a dim-witted receptionist.
Butler and Yates have a more developed relationship with their characters in this film, so it feels like there’s more history and depth to their relationship; in comparison to that of Stantz and Venkman in the original. China allows for 34 Hollywood films to be released in the country each year, and serves as a huge secondary market for major releases. Her wacky, over-the-top character has been tremendously well written and is a joy to watch on screen, especially in the film’s final act. If you’re still on the fence about seeing it, perhaps, this new clip will sway you.

After all the division and controversy over its roll-out last week, the new all-female Ghostbusters re-boot may not be getting a theatrical release in China – but not for that reason…
