Johnson said his department is deploying 3,000 people that will be dedicated to security at each convention. Niantric, the game’s maker, say no personal information has been accessed, and it is issuing a bug fix to correct the problem.
FBI Director James Comey said there will be “hundreds of people” from the bureau focused on assessing intelligence related to groups that aspire to commit acts of domestic terrorism.
The attack in Nice, France during the city’s Bastille Day festivities comes just days before the start of USA political conventions that were already raising security concerns.
Rebecca Harms, leader of the ecologist Greens group in the European Union legislature said: “At first I thought it was a joke”.
The Republican National Convention begins Monday in Cleveland.
At a hearing examining terrorist threats to the USA more broadly, Johnson said his biggest concern is an individual who quietly and quickly becomes self-radicalized over the internet to carry out an attack with little warning.
The Democratic National Convention, where Hillary Clinton is to be nominated, will be held in Philadelphia from July 25 to 28. In addition, 1,000 US government employees will be headed to both conventions, he said. A federal judge’s recent decision had numerous 30 million Netflix users wondering if they were breaking the law.
While in Cleveland, Secretary Johnson inspected the Multi-Agency Coordinating Center (MACC), where he received an overview of security planning for next week’s convention.
Various groups have encouraged members to arm themselves in Cleveland, where the open carry of firearms is allowed.
“It does present a challenging situation, very plainly”, he said. They will be augmented by the Ohio National Guard and state and local law enforcement.
“The prospect of another attack by a self-radicalized actor – somebody inspired by a foreign terrorist organization – is the threat that most keeps me up at night”, he said.
