On eve of convention, an underwhelming rollout of GOP ticket

Donald Trump spent a whopping 28 minutes hitting the same talking points he’s repeated during his presidential campaign before he introduced Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate yesterday, hailing the Hoosier as his “first choice” and “partner”.

“Donald Trump is a good man and he will make a great President of the United States of America”, the Republican VP candidate stated in front of roughly 300 supporters at the Hilton in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday morning.

At long last, President Hairpiece picked a running mate this week, passing over Newt Gingrich and Chris “I’ve Made A Huge Mistake” Christie for Indiana Governor Mike Pence, a social conservative the Trump team hopes will curry favor with Republicans who don’t think Trump is right-wing very bad enough for them.

Trump spoke first, while Pence stood off stage out of view.

“The American people are exhausted”, Pence said in remarks that included numerous same talking points that until recently he was using in his bid for re-election.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, right, introduces Gov. Mike Pence, R-Ind., during a campaign event to announce Pence as the vice presidential running mate on, Saturday, July 16, 2016, in NY. “Donald Trump gets it”.

In foreign policy, Trump would lead from strength, Pence said. There have been reports that Trump was still having serious doubts about Pence on Thursday night, looking for a way out.

Trump based NAFTA, signed under President Bill Clinton and a regular target for him in his anti-free trade campaign position, but didn’t note that Pence has a long history of voting for free trade. The American people are exhausted.

John McCain and Mitt Romney, the last two Republican presidential candidates, will also stay away. One logo showed the T in the Trump’s name penetrating the P in Pence’s name, leading to many ribald comments about how exactly the ticket would pan out. It was a lot about himself, a lot of what we’ve heard before, as both Katy and Hallie have mentioned, a lot of the stump speech, a lot of, “Hey, I won this, and the party needs to come to me”.

When he did get round to talking about the man he hopes will boost his popularity among wavering Republicans, Mr Trump resorted to his notes, praising Mr Pence’s track record as a congressman and governor of IN and describing him as a “solid, solid person”.

“Before we head home to pizza night, a few words of thanks”, said Pence, expressing gratitude to his family, who flanked him on stage.

Pence, whose calm demeanor forms a marked counterpoint to the fiery Trump, was chosen in part to ease concerns in some GOP corners about the billionaire’s impulsive style and lack of political experience.

Pence said that Trump “is a man that appreciates candor”. You could tell. This was an unfocused meandering through the recent past. He’s bragged that he would win NY and California, and he’s tried to make a pitch to disaffected Bernie Sanders voters.
