Two Republicans with knowledge of the process said he felt boxed in by advisers and other Republicans who preferred Pence over the two other finalists, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Therefore, Trump’s pick of Pence would also help to quell concerns among social conservatives that the NY billionaire developer is too liberal on social issues.

Warren, who has been rumored to be in the running to become Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton’s vice presidential pick, went on to blast Trump and Pence for their stance on gay marriage. “And, and this campaign and Donald Trump’s candidacy has been about the issues the American people care about”.

“So one of the primary reasons I chose Mike was I looked at IN, and I won IN big”, Trump said. Sumner said Pence has put policies in place in IN that have got the state back on track economically and have made it a safer place to live.

The event – the culmination of a vice presidential rollout that featured mixed signals, second-guessing and a 24-hour delay – was meant to assert that Trump and Pence would stand up to America’s enemies while being “the law-and-order candidates” at home.

Pence depicted the presumptive Republican ticket, just two days before the start of the Republican National Convention, as embracing traditional Republican values of smaller government, fiscal responsibility and strong national defense while describing his rise as a “small-town boy” in IN who served in Congress before winning the governorship of his state. Pence, whose state recently imprisoned a woman for having an abortion, accepted the spot on Trump’s ticket, thanking God and his family for the opportunity to terrorize an even larger portion of the population. “I believe he correctly understood that he needed to unify our party, that Mike Pence will be a good president if called upon, that he’s got solid values”.

Trump also jabbed lightly at Pence for not endorsing him during the Indiana Republican primary contest. Mr Pence backed Texas Senator Ted Cruz.
