The Israeli military says two soldiers have been killed after a grenade one of the troops was holding exploded.

Two Israeli soldiers were killed, and three others injured by the accidental explosion at the entrance of a military position on the Golan Heights, north-east of the country, according to a statement from the Israeli army.

While Israel has sought to avoid being dragged into the Syrian civil war, it has attacked Syrian military targets when fire from the conflict spills over into its territory.

A Syrian rebel source in the area said the Syrian army had launched a rare air raid on al-Shajara village along the Jordanian border.

The army is trying to ascertain whether it was sent by the Lebanese-based Hezbollah terror group, which is now fighting alongside the forces of Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The Golan Heights is a strategic plateau that Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Middle East, and annexed in a move that has not won worldwide recognition.
