Multiple police officers shot in Louisiana

The headquarters was the site of some of the protests last weekend that came about after Alton Sterling was shot and killed in an altercation with police at a convenience store on July 5.

A witness told WBRZ-TV that a man was dressed in black with his face covered shooting indiscriminately when he walked out between a convenience store and auto wash across from Hammond Air Plaza.

Police say one of the suspects, 17-year-old Antonio Thomas, told investigators that they planned to shoot police.

One officer was sent to Baton Rouge General Medical Center and was being treated for “non-life-threatening injuries”, said spokeswoman Meghan Parrish.

President Obama quickly issued a statement condemning the attack on law enforcement.

The officers were shot early Sunday – and – as of 9:30 a.m. – a manhunt was on for the suspect or suspects.

While the scene of the shootings was contained, police warned residents to stay away from the area, near Airline Highway, which is a mile from the Baton Rouge Police Department headquarters, where dozens of protesters were arrested earlier this month.

It was unclear who the latest shooting’s suspects were or whether they were involved in any of the sometimes heated protests in the city.

The remaining officers are hospitalized in critical condition, the source said. His death was captured on cellphone video.

A spokesman for the Louisiana governor says that the governor is at the hospital where police officers were taken following a shooting in Baton Rouge.

The Louisiana police officers who shot and killed Sterling were responding to his attempt to reach for a gun, a Baton Rouge detective wrote in a court document.

Law enforcement agencies throughout Baton Rouge are on high alert, including the LSU Police Department.

It was followed a day later by the shooting death of another black man in Minnesota, whose girlfriend livestreamed the aftermath of his death on Facebook.

“There was a shooting, we believe there are multiple suspects, one suspect is deceased”, Corporal McKneely said.

Col. Mike Edmonson told media, “We believe that the person who shot and killed our officers that he was the person that was shot and killed at the scene”.

Rogers said an officer in the congregation hastily left the church near the end of the service, and a pastor announced that “something had happened”.

“It seems like after Alton’s death, so much has been going on dealing with police and killing other police officers”. “I got a text on my phone”, Maness said.

Terrance Carter spoke Sunday to The Associated Press by telephone, saying the family just wants peace and that his uncle would not want this violence.

Rogers and her husband drove near the scene, but were blocked at an intersection closed down by police.

“Everything is moving fast and I have not been able to verify everything”, he said. “It’s a bad way to end a Sunday service”, Villere said after a prayerful meeting with the Louisiana GOP delegation here. “This is in an area that’s a mile from police headquarters”.
