What happens at the Republican and Democratic conventions, day by day

The glam. The speeches, protests and parties.

“Yes…”, Clancy said. Demonstrators “threatening harm to the candidates, being disruptive, and some just wanting to be heard, are willing to do whatever – in terms of jumping over barriers – to be heard”.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, left, introduces Gov. Mike Pence, R-Ind., during a campaign event to announce Pence as the vice presidential running mate on, Saturday, July 16, 2016, in NY.

Whether this year’s confab meets that benchmark remains to be seen.

Mark Winslow, who recently resigned from the Tennessee Republican State Executive Committee after saying the party’s “soul rotted away”, is skeptical the convention will unite the party.

Still, the quadrennial gathering boils down to a few key pieces of business the Republican Party must carry out before it can turn its focus fully to winning the White House in November.

While the Donald Trump-Mike Pence presidential ticket made its debut at a weekend event that was awkward at times, it highlights a pairing designed in part to bring together fractious elements of the Republican Party on the eve of its national convention.

Wednesday night will feature the vice-presidential nominee’s speech – a time for the country to get to know Mike Pence, the current governor of IN and a former member of Congress.

Good question. As of last week, delegates had not received schedules of daily activities in Cleveland before the evening convention sessions. This is a particular worry after the Dallas attack and given the state’s open carry gun laws, which allow licensed firearm owners to holster their weapons even within the convention’s 1.7 square-mile event zone, where other potentially risky items like knives and crowbars have been banned.

Other members of Maine’s delegation are headed to Cleveland not knowing exactly what to expect. Others were on slates put together by the presidential campaigns.

The Republicans will host 2,470 delegates and 2,302 alternate delegates from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and five territories. Members of the RNC are automatic delegates. Republican Party leaders may be called upon to quash a last-minute rebellion by anti-Trump forces, while The Donald himself will be working to try to unify the party behind his controversial candidacy. Democrats now have about 250,000 more registered voters there than Republicans. John McCain’s past as a prisoner of war in Vietnam.

Brandishing his running mate’s job-creating credentials, Trump ticked through a list of statistics he said showed how Pence had pulled IN out of economic recessions: an unemployment rate that fell to less than 5 percent on his watch, an uptick IN the labor force and a decrease IN IN residents on unemployment insurance. But he has more than enough delegates.

What will happen outside the convention hall starting Monday, the first day of the four-day convention, is uncertain.

Those who do plan to speak include at least 20 current or former Republican politicians, including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Paul Ryan and Texas Sen. Cleveland’s mayor and police chief have repeatedly said the city is prepared for all kinds of situations, but as other cities in the USA and overseas have tragically experienced in recent days and weeks, it’s impossible to foresee everything.

Culp believes Trump is bound by promises to appoint conservative judges, and she likes Indiana Gov. Mike Pence as his running mate.

That wide range of speakers is appealing to Lewis, and he said that conventions often provide a platform for speakers who are not as well-known to make a name for themselves. This year’s roster has some potential, particularly since it’s largely a collection of non-political figures likely to share their own personal stories rather than promote Republican ideology. Rabbi Haskel Lookstein, who leads the congregation that Trump’s daughter, Ivanka, attends, was scheduled to appear but backed out.

Who that someone else might be is undetermined. Instead, say hello to professional golfer Natalie Gulbis.

Democrats, in contrast, have nabbed entertainers like Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, Lenny Kravitz and Cyndi Lauper for their convention the following week in Philadelphia. The state party’s rules require its delegates to back their candidates until the candidates formally release them. A committee writes it up, then the delegates vote to approve or amend.

Nonetheless, on Tuesday night, in Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena, 1,543 delegates – 306 more than he needs for the nomination – will cast their votes for Donald J. Trump. The city told CNNMoney it’s spending $5 million on bomb squads and dogs from regional transit police and others.
