Hundreds of people have gathered at a peaceful rally along a major bridge near downtown Cleveland the day before the Republican National Convention gets underway.
For Republicans from Missouri, Illinois and around the nation who are gathering in Cleveland on Monday, that kind of nostalgia may turn out to be a case of watching what you wish for.
Whether this year’s confab meets that benchmark remains to be seen. Kasich is not scheduled to address the convention.
At the convention, the Republican Party will also adopt its official party platform, a formal document that lays out the party’s policy principles but has no binding effect on how its politicians ultimately govern. The hardened security perimeter under control of the U.S. Secret Service around the convention venue, Quicken Loans Arena, also is in place.
Miller will attend the convention with some of the state’s most powerful Republicans: Gov. Rick Scott, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, and Martin County Sen. Members of the RNC are automatic delegates.
Carlstrom lived in Colorado for many years. Concerned that being associated with Trump may hurt their own standing with voters, those Republicans are choosing to stay away. Neither candidacy generated the electricity of Trump’s campaign, he said. And even if a Minnesota delegate chose to go rogue and vote for someone else, Downey said the state will submit the previously agreed upon delegate totals, which were determined as part of the state’s binding agreement with the national party. Early on Thursday, rebels were confident that they could muster enough support on the Rules Committee to bring a “minority report” on their proposal to a floor vote on the convention’s first day. House Speaker Paul Ryan likes to call it a “binary choice”. Ted Cruz of Texas by just 1,726 votes here, out of more than 762,000 cast in Missouri’s presidential primary in March.
Bush, once a revered figure among Florida Republicans, can afford to ditch Trump since his political career appears over.
But I’ve known them well enough for three decades, when they were my adversaries in the 1980s, when I served as communications director for the 1984 Democratic Convention in San Francisco.
Republicans have struggled to put together an impressive roster of nonpoliticians. It’s about what Republicans are now, and that’s the party of Donald Trump. Trump’s opponents had mounted a small mutiny on the Rules Committee, which convened yesterday to vote on the rules that will govern the convention. He’s expected to be rewarded at the convention with a plum speaking slot on the main stage. A proposed “conscience clause” allowing delegates to ignore their pledges was rejected on a voice vote that wasn’t formally tallied but sounded equally lopsided. Still, social conservatives and others were spending the weekend strategizing. They hope to force procedural votes in long-shot bids to potentially derail Trump’s nomination. “The cliché, ‘The world is run by those who show up, ‘ is so true”.
How Trump proposes to do so has inspired a fervor in fans and foes alike.
“I don’t see that there’s going to be any other nominee besides Donald Trump – no organization has contacted me with any alternative”, said state Sen.
Martschink, a future state senator, drew boos from vast numbers of Reagan supporters in the state delegation. To make sure all those conventiongoers are safe and secure, Cleveland police are asking the city’s homeless population to keep an eye out for threats.

Security concerns are particularly high this year due to racial tensions and civilian-police violence across the United States, plus recent mass casualty events including a nightclub shooting in Orlando and Islamic State group-linked attacks outside the U.S. After days of his aides saying he hadn’t made a final decision, the billionaire called Pence Thursday afternoon to offer him the job, but hours later postponed their first appearance after a truck attack killed 84 people in Nice, France.
