New York Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes, Noah Syndergaard depart game with injuries

Mets pitcher Noah Syndergaard and outfielder Yoenis Cespedes both left Friday night’s game against the Washington Nationals with apparent injuries.

Cespedes exited after the third inning with a strained right quad.

Syndergaard (9-4) experienced arm fatigue in the fifth inning and was lifted nearly immediately.

Syndergaard has a bone spur in the back of his pitching elbow and is being treated with anti-inflammatory medication.

“His arm went dead”.

“The tests that they put on him (Friday) night with the description that he gave to the doctors, again, they’re talking about fatigue more than anything”, Collins said. “But he said there’s no pain”. After a short discussion, Syndergaard – who allowed three runs, four hits and three walks while striking out five – walked off the field with Ramirez and immediately disappeared into the clubhouse. They are expected to be examined Saturday.

“It’s disappointing, but there will be a lot more”, Syndergaard said. Even if he threw 175 innings last year, 180, and I think he threw nearly 190 with the playoffs, you’re hoping this year 210’s, 215 not out of the range, that it’s not out of the realm of possibility of getting him up over 200. Scherzer replaces his teammate, RHP Stephen Strasburg.

“The first pitch, it didn’t come out the same”, Werth said.

Cespedes said he pulled the muscle pursuing Daniel Murphy’s third-inning RBI double in left-center. “Hopefully he’ll be fine”, Collins said, adding that when the season resumes Friday in Philadelphia, “I’m sure that first day he will go out and throw on the side to see how he feels”.

But the Mets finally got in the hit column, and on the board, when Asdrubal Cabrera led of the bottom of the fifth with a solo homer to right field on a full count. I saw the 93 and that’s a little bit harder than his slider. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson expects a decision on surgery to be made in the next few days before the All-Star break.

Jonathan Papelbon pitched the ninth for his 19th save in 21 chances.

Mets catcher Rene Rivera visited the mound and then went back behind the plate before Collins and assistant trainer Brian Chicklo came out of the dugout, drawing groans from the crowd.

NY dropped to 7-2 on an 11-game homestand, its longest of the season.

Washington improved to 15-1 with Strasburg on the mound this year. He is the only qualified starter in the majors without a loss. But the Mets, who have won seven of their past eight, answered just a half inning later with a Travis d’Arnaud blast and an upper-deck shot from Jose Reyes, his first homer since joining the club this week. “So, he’s as advertised”.

The start was delayed 37 minutes by rain. While Cespedes will not attend the festivities, Collins said Syndergaard will still head to San Diego, joining Jeurys Familia, Bartolo Colon and the entire Mets coaching staff.
