Red Cross nearing shortage on certain blood types

There have been about 876 fewer donations in the New York and Pennsylvania region per month during this year’s June and July than the previous 10 months. “Our regular donors are vacationing, many of them, and we feel that coupled in with the high school and college students can impact donations”. Type AB is universal for plasma and can be transfused to any blood type. B negative and A negative can be transfused to those with Rh negative or positive blood.

Cancer patients, surgical patients or bone marrow recipients often require additional platelets, which help the blood to clot.

Red Cross is calling on all eligible donors in the metro Detroit area who have O negative, B negative, and A negative blood types to give immediately.

Type AB and platelet donors are also continually needed to help save patients’ lives. Blood donation appointments can be quickly and easily scheduled by using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS.
