British comedian Caroline Aherne, the writer/star of the late-1990s BBC comedy The Royale Family, has died of cancer at age 52.

Gallagher added: “She used this next song on a very, very, very, very brilliant sitcom in England called The Royle Family”.

She tweeted: “I was so lucky to work on Granada Upfront #happydays It was even funnier behind the scenes”.

“I will miss her making us all cry with laughter”.

Speaking in 2014, she said: “My brother and I were born with cancer of the eyes, the retina, my mum told us only special people get cancer”.

Aherne created some of British comedy’s best-loved characters – lazy daughter Denise in “The Royle Family” and acerbic chat show host Mrs Merton.

A Twitter page for The Royle Family, the sitcom she co-wrote and appeared in, posted: “So heartbroken to hear about Caroline Aherne”. I can never ever remember her complaining.

Noel Gallagher, who paid a heartfelt tribute to his friend Caroline Aherne by dedicating his song Half The World Away to her during a show in America. “I hadn’t been that impressed with a comedy since Fawlty Towers”, he said. “Her name was Caroline and she was a very very amusing woman”.

Famously, she once asked Debbie McGee what first attracted her to “the millionaire Paul Daniels”.

Mrs Merton producer Peter Kessler attributed her problems to the fame she deserved but found hard to deal with. She was a one off talent with a heart of gold.

A talented writer and performer, Caroline Aherne established herself as one of the best comedy creators working in the UK.

Most recently, Aherne was also known for her narration on hit reality show, Gogglebox. A multitude more came on The Fast Show, in which we shared the joy of the memorable Roy and “What did I say, Roy?”

John Thomson, Aherne’s co-star on The Fast Show, said his friend had “raw talent” and “no agenda”.

Mark Gatiss said he was sad at the “awful news” saying Aherne was “so gifted”. She had a cameo playing my wife Sheila, who I serenaded with the Smiths’ classic Sheila Take a Bow.

However, Aherne exhausted of life in front the camera, and rarely acted after The Royle Family. I know only too well, the pain that comes with the moniker “celebrity”.
