In US: Multiple police officers shot in Baton Rouge; some reported dead

Ten days after the officer-involved shooting death of 37-year-old Alton Sterling, his body was laid to rest in his hometown of Baton Rouge. Moments later, one of the officers shot and killed Sterling, a black man who had been selling CDs outside the store, while he was on the ground.

Sterling’s death and the two cellphone videos documenting it have sparked widespread protests.

Bridgewater’s attorney, Mark Upton, said his client’s bond for a 2015 criminal charge in state court was revoked following his July 10 arrest.

East Baton Rouge Sheriff Sid J. Gautreaux said the discovered plot, coupled with the killing of police officers in Dallas, led the department to highly equip its personnel for the protests.

Police shot him at a close quarters on July 5 as he sold CDs outside a convenience store, an incident that was recorded on a mobile phone. “We’re bearing the same shoes right now”, McMillon said in an interview with The Associated Press Friday.

Sterling was killed July 5 in front of a convenience store by two white police officers. She sympathizes with the families of the fallen officers and says she does now want anyone to get that call.

Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie said threats like that justified an increased show of force at the demonstrations, as officers donned riot gear after starting with a mostly reserved, low profile.

Alton Sterling’s funeral took place Friday in Louisiana.

Then in Dallas last Thursday, one of the protests ended with the killing of five policemen in a racially motivated attack by a black USA military veteran who opened fire on white officers.

Such calls having been growing across the country since the fatal police shooting of Michael Brown, a black teenager, by a white officer in Ferguson, Mo., in 2014.

The service, which was open to the public, had several notable speakers in addition to Jackson, including Baton Rouge Councilwoman Chauna Banks Daniel, U.S. Rep. Cedric Richmond and the Rev. Al Sharpton. Police have said they found a gun in Sterling’s pocket. Sterling leaves behind five children, including his 15-year-old son Cameron who participated in a televised town hall with Obama on Thursday.
