The Boston Red Sox look to sweep the New York Yankees late Sunday night on ESPN. Relief pitcher William Cuevas was sent to Triple-A to make room for Pomeranz, but Farrell said before Saturday’s game that the team has yet to decide how to make room for the other arms.

The Yankees are hoping someone will step up in the coming weeks, as they need to decide if they are going to become sellers at the deadline. The Yankees are 1-7 in their last 8 vs.

They could have pulled within 3.5 games of the second wild card, but they’re instead 5.5 games out. His sixth homer of the season and first since May 18 tied it at 1.

“We need to win games”, Brian McCann said.

“….there shall be no negotiations or dealings respecting employment, either present or prospective, between any player, coach or manager and any Major or Minor League Club other than the Club with which the player is under contract, or acceptance of terms, or by which the player is reserved or which has the player on its Negotiation List, or between any umpire and any baseball employer other than the baseball employer with which the umpire is under contract, or acceptance of terms, unless the Club or baseball employer with which the person is connected shall have, in writing, expressly authorized such negotiations or dealings prior to their commencement.”

Sandy Leon stole the show with a three-run homer in the sixth inning, though, going 2-for-4 with a run and four RBIs. Masahiro Tanaka takes the hill, and he’s 6-2 with a 3.23 ERA and 93 strikeouts this season.

Many of those starts have been like this one, easily dismissed as the product of one bad inning or a bunch of seeing-eye singles.

Boston also reached deals with third baseman Bobby Dalbec (fourth round, $650,000), right-hander Mike Shawaryn (fifth round, $637,500), center fielder Juan Carlos Abreu (23rd round, $100,000), right-hander Francisco Lopez Soto (25th round, $40,000) and shortstop Ivan Houellemont (not drafted, $20,000). The estimated 412-foot drive prompted Boston television play-by-play announcer Dave O’Brien to say “Sandy Leon is absolutely fantastic.”Leon had three hits for the fourth time this season, which is double the amount of three-hit games he had entering the season”. Already a Yankees killer with three victories in four overall starts and a 2.08 ERA after two starts last season, Rodriguez continued to demonstrate his penchant for dominating pinstripes in the 5-2 victory.

That was Sabathia’s only significant mistake, but it left him with another disappointment.

“Playing nearly like four times a week, I think that’s helped”, Leon said. “They aren’t right now, and that’s just been what’s killing me so far”. But I can’t really change much that I’m doing right now. “I understand there is a lot of talk about myself getting five days’ rest and there’s some difference in the numbers when I take the mound with four days’ rest”. But this was another start for the Red Sox who have a quality starter in Wright 11-5, a pitcher that has helped his team keep pace with first place Baltimore in the Al East.

The Yankees’ offense struggled, putting up one run against Eduardo Rodriguez who came into the game sporting an ERA over eight. NY will play four straight at home against first-place Baltimore after finishing up with Boston and then faces San Francisco, Houston and Tampa Bay before the deadline.TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPNPITCHING MATCHUP: Red Sox LH David Price (9-6, 4.34 ERA) vs. Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (6-2, 3.23) Price is hoping to pick up right where he left off before the break, when he struck out 10 and scattered four hits over eight shutout innings against Tampa Bay.

To celebrate Rodriguez’s leaving the game, Chase Headley homered off reliever Matt Barnes to start the bottom of the eighth.
