Trump and his new running mate appeared on stage together only briefly before Trump disappeared and Pence gave a speech that closely hewed to the populist themes that Trump has voiced, describing himself as “really just a small-town boy”.

“I’m here today to introduce the man who will be my partner in this campaign, and the White House, to fix our system”.

U.S. Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump and his running mate Indiana Governor Mike Pence appeared for the first time in public together since Pence was named as Trump’s running mate in NY on Saturday. Trump made that announcement earlier Saturday at a news conference in New York City.

“Even though the Trump rallies are big productions. for Mike Pence, this is his style: a little more understated, a little more traditional, a little more what you’d expect from a conservative”, said Dana Carroll of suburban Indianapolis.

Despite Trump’s original goal for the news conference, it took almost 30 minutes before Pence made an appearance at the podium, with Trump first going off on winding tirades against Hillary Clinton, radical Islamic terrorism and global trade deals before periodically declaring he would go “back to Mike Pence” in his speech. “He is a solid, solid person”, he said.

Pence has been the governor of IN since 2013. “Americans can choose a leader who will fight to make America safe and prosperous again and bring real change or we can elect someone who literally personifies the failed establishment in Washington D.C.”, Pence said. “Donald Trump gets it and he understands the American people”.

“Great honor. Thank you”, Trump said. Other reasons for his pick: “H$3 e looks very good, and he’s got an incredible family”. Though Pence claimed the law would protect the “many people of faith [who] feel their religious liberty is under attack by government action”, critics have pointed out that the law was cleverly created to allow Christian business owners to discriminate against members of the LGBTQ community.

Mr Trump praised his vice-presidential choice as man who had served “with distinction” in Congress equipped with “the skills of a highly talented executive”.

Before getting into the reasoning behind why he chose Pence, Trump spoke about the terror attack in Nice, France, saying the horror beyond belief will never stop and called for new leadership and new thinking. Mike Pence of IN was a remarkable reminder that, ultimately, the Trump campaign is about one person. But Trump went to the governor’s mansion on Wednesday, suggesting he would be the billionaire’s pick. That fueled speculation that Trump was reconsidering and fueled hopes among allies of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie that he might still be in the running.
