New British foreign secretary arrives for first EU meeting

In an inauspicious start to his first trip overseas as foreign secretary, the Brussels-bound plane Johnson was traveling in Sunday had to make an emergency landing near London due to a technical issue, delaying his meeting with Mogherini.

But Mr Johnson today sought to reassure Britain’s EU “friends” that the country would continue to take a lead role in European co-operation even outside the bloc.

“We are not going to be in any way abandoning our leading role in European cooperation and participation of all kinds”.

It came after a massive group of anarchists arrived at Mr Johnson’s £2.3 million North London home on Friday evening to protest against him.

The ministry said that Johnson “thanked the RAF crew for their professionalism and was grateful to Luton Airport for the brief, unscheduled welcome”.

On Monday morning, Mr. Ayrault adopted a more conciliatory tone.

He said: “I had a telephone conversation with him on Saturday”. I always speak to Boris Johnson with the greatest sense of sincerity and frankness. “It’s like this that we must go forward”, he said. The British view is that, because they have a handle on radical Islamists in their country, they are able to identify and counteract the threats before they occur.

She said Britain’s new Foreign Secretary would be welcomed “as a new member of the family”.

He also said he would keep an open mind on Mr. Johnson, despite the latter’s past criticisms about the EU.

Kerry visits London later today in an effort to reaffirm the two sides’ shared history and values which the Brexit vote had not changed, he said.

He said he had a “very good conversation” with European Union foreign affairs head Federica Mogherini late yesterday – although a dinner with her was called off after his plane had to make an emergency landing.

The leaders of five combined authorities said it was “absolutely vital” the North was heard during negotiations to leave the European Union as its population is greater than London’s and its economy larger than those of Scotland and Wales. For some people, that includes adopting a more muted British position on key questions such as whether the bloc should maintain its sanctions on Russian Federation. Based on an individual acquainted with the problem, Ms. and Brown Mogherini talked for around 40 minutes.
