The Twins, who emphasize nothing if not continuity throughout the organization, have promoted assistant GM Rob Antony as an interim in the role.

Ryan was named GM in November 2011 after spending the previous four seasons as an assistant to GM Bill Smith.

“The decision to part ways with Terry was hard, painful and not obvious”, Twins owner and CEO Jim Pohlad said in a statement.

In a statement, Ryan said he is “disappointed we were unable to bring Minnesota a third World Championship”.

Ryan was a pitcher for the Twins in the minors in the mid-70s before he switched gears and took on administrative roles. He returned to baseball in 1980 as Midwest scouting supervisor for the New York Mets, a position he held for six years.

The Twins are 33-58 entering a 7-game road trip starting in Detroit tonight. Antony has been in the organization himself for an impressive 29 seasons, initially being hired as the Assistant Director of Media Relations back in 1988.
