1 charge dismissed at trial in black man’s death
The Baltimore police van driver who was acquitted last month in the death of Freddie Gray will get almost $88,000 in back pay, officials said.

An assault charge against Lt. Brian Rice was dismissed Monday as the prosecution rested its case during the third day of the Freddie Gray-related trial, WBAL-TV reported. The judge kept three remaining charges in place: involuntary manslaughter, reckless endangerment and.
Freddie Gray died in April of past year, one week after suffering a spinal injury while in custody.
Because Rice waived his right to a jury trial, Williams alone will decide whether to convict or acquit after closing arguments Thursday.
Nero testified that Rice put Gray into the transport van after he was shackled.
At one point during Nero’s testimony, there was a heated exchange between Nero and prosecutor Michael Schatzow during the state’s redirect. “Gray needed medical care”. According to Arden, Gray’s symptoms suggested that he suffered his injuries at the very end of the trip to a police station, not in the middle, as prosecutors argued. He opted for a bench trial and declined to take the stand.
From the outset the Gray case has been fraught with emotion, of great let-down for Gray’s family and their legion of supporters and great relief for the officers who’ve been cleared in his death.
Defense attorneys started their case by calling Donta Allen, the sole prisoner to ride with Gray during the last leg of the trip through West Baltimore.
Rice’s trial comes just weeks after the judge acquitted Officer Caesar Goodson Jr., the van driver, on all counts, including second-degree depraved-heart murder.
One policeman-Officer William Porter-had a mistrial due to a hung jury and will be retried in September.
Earlier in the trial a charge of misconduct in office against Rice, for making an arrest without probable cause, was dropped by the state after they said Rice was not directly involved in Gray’s arrest.
