Edwards said one of the wounded officers was fighting for his life while a second underwent surgery and needed further surgery on his neck.

A website, social media accounts and YouTube videos that appeared tied to Long include complaints about police treatment of black people and praise for killings of the Dallas policemen.

Police in Baton Rouge say a gas station not far from police headquarters is where three law enforcement officers were shot to death early Sunday. In one video, referring to Native Americans, he said, “When they were extincted by the same people that run this country, my question to you, just something you can think about: At what point should they have stood up?”

Following the deaths of Sterling and Castile, who many believe posed no threat to public safety yet were still shot to death by police officers, activists have taken to the streets and message boards demanding peace.

“It’s a time for peace, but it’s a time for war, and most of the times when you want peace, you got to go to war”, Long said, jazz playing in the background as he spoke. “You see what I’m saying?” Its adherents say they aren’t American citizens but instead “non-resident aliens” not subject to taxes, government regulations or any local, state and federal laws. That loose movement is generally associated with white supremacy.

Sterling’s shooting in Louisiana was followed a day later by the shooting death of another black man in Minnesota, whose girlfriend livestreamed the aftermath of his death on Facebook.

“All of us are again heartbroken at the news of yet another tragedy; shocked by such callous disregard for human life; and dismayed at yet another instance of violence tearing at the fabric of our nation”, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said in prepared remarks to a group of black law enforcement officials gathered in Washington.

Erika Green told The Associated Press Sunday that she is friends with the family of Jackson, one of three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers who were killed Sunday morning. Montrell Jackson: The 32-year-old officer had been serving with the Baton Rouge Police Department for 10 years.

At the same event, Lynch’s predecessor as attorney general, Eric Holder, said that “an attack on a police officer is an attack on society itself and can simply not be condoned”. “But if we are truly to honor his service and mourn his loss – and the loss of his friends and colleagues, and of too many others who have been taken from us – we must not let hatred infect our hearts”.

The Pentagon late Sunday said Long, who lived in Kansas City, Mo., was a decorated Marine who served in Iraq from June 2008 to January 2009 as a data network specialist. He would not elaborate but said the shooter was definitely “seeking out” police.

Two weeks ago, as Baton Rouge roiled following the death of Alton Sterling and after five officers were shot dead in Dallas, Jackson published an emotional note to Facebook.

The New York Police Department is doubling up all foot patrols and security posts, according to a memo obtained by CNN. “He was the kind of guy who represents the badge in the very best way”.

“I can’t explain what brought us here”, she said. “I don’t know what was going on with him”.

According to military records, Long was a Marine from 2005 to 2010 and rose to the rank of sergeant. He was assigned to units in Miramar, California, and Okinawa, Japan, during his military career.

Yet at the same time, when he’s confronted about police violence, Obama says things like, “Black folks and Latino folks also carry some assumptions”.

The University of Alabama issued a statement saying Long attended classes for one semester in the spring of 2012. The book, The Cosmo Way: A W (H) olistic Guide for the Total Transformation of Melanated People, is styled nearly as a self-help guide.

After the Dallas shooting, a July 8 post read: “The Shooter was NOT WHITE, He was one of us! We demand law and order”. The man describes himself as a “Freedom Strategist, Mental Game Coach, Nutritionist, Author and Spiritual Advisor”.

Although a review of Long’s online postings Sunday night did not immediately reveal a motive, his Twitter page offered a hint that he may not have feared death. His book contains a special thank you to “the all-powerful, most attractive, one and only Black woman”. “And just bc you shed your physical body doesn’t mean that you’re dead”.
