The confirmation was made on Sunday in London at a Star Wars Celebration event where he sat next to Star Wars: Force Awakens vet John Boyega.
The first people to hit the stage were Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, Story Group Head Kiri Hart and the Story Group’s Pablo Hidalgo, who all praised Episode VIII Director Rian Johnson.
“You’re going to be fine”, Boyega said to Ehrenreich.
He also assured the audience that they’re still using a huge number of practical effects, in addition to the green screen work.
When asked why Lord and Miller wanted to tell a Han Solo story, Lord said, “I relate to him”. Remarkably, Ehrenreich was the first actor to audition for the role of young Han.
Filming on the as-yet untitled Han Solo movie is set to begin in late January or early February of next year, with the script still being worked on by The Empire Strikes Back and The Force Awakens screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan and his son, Jon.
Despite the big reveal, fans are still being kept in the dark about the story’s plot but it has been confirmed that it will focus around ‘an origin story about Han Solo and Chewie’.
The British actor, who plays Finn in the rebooted sci-fi film series, joined directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller after they had introduced the new Han Solo to the crowd. “I’d never acted with a Wookie before”, Ehrenreich said.
