Iowans tackle day one of Republican National Convention
Since anti-Trump delegates’ last-ditch attempt to deny Donald Trump failed last week, the Republican delegates are set to nominate the real-estate mogul and reality-TV star as their presidential nominee, along with his recently announced pick for vice president, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence.

Joni Ernst served as the commander of a combat support battalion in Iraq and knows the importance of strong leadership.
The presidential candidate has made a decision to take her up on the offer with Monday night’s high-profile speaking slot at the convention. Just days after becoming the first Iowa woman sworn in as a US senator, she delivered the Republican response to the State of the Union address.
The RNC’s first-day theme will be “Make America Safe Again”, emphasizing immigration, national defense, and counterterrorism policy.
“I wish she would wear a Hawkeye shirt, but that’s not going to happen”, said Jeff Kaufmann, chair of the Republican Party of Iowa.
She said she would highlight what she characterized as failures of the current administration and tie them back to Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, who served as secretary of state during Obama’s term.
The retired Iowa National Guard lieutenant colonel had plenty to say Sunday about Hillary Clinton, too, according to the Omaha World-Herald.
“Our world is virtually imploding, when we look around us right now”, Ernst said, according to the Register. But our administration refuses to call it as such.
“It’s go big or go home”, she said, chuckling.
“I think this will probably be more intimidating because we will be in a convention center with people out there and also knowing that people across the United States will also be watching”, she said.
She spoke about how the nation is divided earlier Monday morning.

Ms. Ernst hopes her speech will be a part of a culminating event, in which the GOP unites around Donald Trump. She said she plans to do plenty of rehearsing to get her timing down, although she’s also trying to protect her voice, given that she has a slight head cold coming on.
