Uber reaches 2 billion rides six months after hitting its first billion

Uber has completed more than 2 billion trips on its app, the company’s chief executive said on Monday, a milestone that arrives just weeks after the ride service added another $4.7 billion to its warchest. Kalanick wrote that the 2 billionth trip was actually 147 different trips which started simultaneously in 16 countries on five continents. “The shortest, a POOL trip in Changsha, China, lasted just three minutes”.

Now in a total of 450 cities worldwide, the company looks to continue its upward trajectory in both rides and investment funding.

Uber had to wait nearly six years to complete a billion rides, but only a few months to reach two billion. The customers that were part of this will also receive $450 of free rides.

Uber hit 2 billion rides on June 18, CEO Travis Kalanick said in a Facebook post, six months after marking its first billion rides.

China had the most rides out of the 147 completed, with 37 percent.

This exponential growth could mean that Uber hits 3 billion rides in even less than six months, especially with the proliferation of commuters using using UberPOOL on a daily basis, especially in large cities like NYC.

The ride-booking giant is worth more than $60 billion and has stockpiled more than $15 billion in cash, but Uber’s milestone announcement comes during a turbulent time for the company. But the competition is still strong in China, where Didi claims that it has more than 87 percent of the market share. He included a trippy video showing Uber’s expansion over the years. Didi responded by saying “cute”.
