Melania Trump Absent for Running Mate Announcement

Past vice presidential announcements have seldom been like that.

In a teaser of Mike Pence’s “60 Minutes” interview that “Face the Nation” aired Sunday, Trump did little more than blame President Barack Obama and Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton for ISIS, and wouldn’t convey what his plan for fighting the terrorist group is. Trump spoke for 28 minutes, alone on the stage, rarely mentioning the IN governor before eventually introducing him.

“I’m hardly “With Her”,” said one investment banker who identifies as a Republican but claims he has not contributed to either campaign. It promises to be very hard at times, especially when Trump says or does something that might make a traditional conservative cringe. The new Trump/Pence campaign logo-yes, that one-was not even present on the rostrum today.

The Trump and Pence team was asked about their views on the instability and violence around the world, the Iraq War, and preventing foreign Muslims from temporarily entering the country, something Governor Pence did not initially support.

The Trump-Pence event offered Americans the first glimpse at what the 2016 Republican presidential ticket will look like, barring the unexpected. On Wednesday morning, she did not join her husband and his children for a meeting with Pence and his wife Karen at their home in Indiana.

Trump returned for a round of photos with the Trump and Pence families.

Pence’s signature effort to date is a rollback in corporate tax rates that Americans for Prosperity’s leadership holds up as a model for other governors.

Trump hardly sounded excited about his own choice.

“One of the big reasons that I chose Mike, and one of the reasons is party unity, I have to be honest”. I want to be an outsider. I think (Christie) would have done a good job. I won in landslides. “IN was going to the firewall”, he recalled. Correct. Indiana’s May 3 primary was where Cruz aimed to stop Trump’s momentum.

Pence endorsed Cruz just before the primary.

“We put into the platform we’re going to get rid of that awful Johnson amendment, and we’re going to let evangelicals, we’re going to let Christians and Jews and people of religion talk without being afraid to talk”, Trump said.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, left, introduces Gov. Mike Pence, R-Ind., during a campaign event to announce Pence as the vice presidential running mate on, Saturday, July 16, 2016, in NY. At the mic will be delegation chairman Jeff Sessions, the first USA senator to endorse Trump and one of his most full-throated supporters in Congress. He noted Indiana’s unemployment rate, 8.4 percent when Pence took office, went below 5 percent, which is correct.

The underwhelming rollout continued when Pence got back to IN, where a few hundred people greeted him at a suburban Indianapolis airport hangar bereft of any “Trump-Pence” signs or other obvious trappings of a presidential campaign.

The state’s economy grew at a 2.2 percent pace in both 2013 and 2014, matching or exceeding gains in the USA overall.

Obama has spent the past three years defending that decision.

Brandishing his running mate’s job-creating credentials, Trump ticked through a list of statistics he said showed how Pence had pulled IN out of economic recessions: an unemployment rate that fell to less than 5 percent on his watch, an uptick IN the labor force and a decrease IN IN residents on unemployment insurance.
