“A lot of spotlight on that committee because it was so crucial to whether or not delegates were able to back away from Donald or stay with him”, Hewitt said.

He has already won the right from a federal judge to vote for someone other than Donald Trump.

The summer disturbances had tensions running high outside the heavily secured convention site in Cleveland.

DiMassimo has pleaded not guilty to a charge of illegally entering a restricted area. This year, the biggest actor on the bill is Scott Baio, best known for playing Chachi in Happy Days, who was due to speak on Monday after receiving a last-minute invitation from Mr Trump last week. But one official said the negotiations had failed, speaking on condition of anonymity to describe private discussions. No more details on the arrest were immediately available.

Trump lashed out after the killing of the police officers in Baton Rouge, almost two weeks after the fatal police shooting of a black man there and another such death near St. Paul, Minnesota sparked nationwide protests.

Convention speakers relentlessly cast the troubling times as a result of ineffective leadership by President Barack Obama and Clinton, who spent four years in his administration.

People gather at Settlers Park to rally for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on the first day of the Republican National Convention on July 18, 2016, in Cleveland, Ohio. Trump has far more than the 1,237 delegates required to win. The conservative delegates have said they think party leaders could thwart a roll call by taking steps like making it hard for them to deliver their documents. Trump has sought to position himself as the law-and-order candidate in an echo of Richard Nixon’s successful presidential campaign of 1968.

The evening’s schedule also features survivors of the attack on the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi as well as immigration activists whose relatives were killed by immigrants living in the United States illegally. Seven would be necessary to force the roll-call vote.

No matter. Trump’s lineup of speakers includes plenty of family members, veterans, business people, entertainers and a smattering of top-drawer Republicans, including House Speaker Paul Ryan and even bitter rival Ted Cruz.

There’s been much discussion about open carry as the convention gets underway Monday. But the Republican governor said he didn’t have the authority.

“If Hillary Clinton can’t give us the truth, why should we give her the presidency”, Pat Smith said.

Kasich’s visit to the IL delegation was the first of several the two-term governor is making to delegates in Cleveland outside the Quicken Loans Arena convention hall, which he has pledged not to set foot in.

There is quite a debate underway between the Cleveland Police Union President and gun advocates. At least two protestors were seen carrying firearms.

There was some dissent on the Cleveland streets.

And as if Republican leaders would want a souvenir, they’ll have it: A group photo from the event taken right after the floor fight will feature empty seats from where delegates who walked out in protest were still missing.

Democrats also angled for some of the attention on Cleveland. The riots that began July 18, 1966, were sparked by a confrontation between black residents and a white bar owner and led to almost a week of looting and violence in one of the city’s east side neighborhoods.
