July 19 now to be observed as ‘Kashmir Solidarity Day’

Officials said that Sunday was the first day without any civilian casualty since the violence engulfed the Valley on July 9, following the killing of Hizb Commander Burhan Wani in a gunfight with the forces on July 8. “One of them succumbed to his injuries”, the spokesperson said, taking the toll to 42 in the current street unrest that has engulfed the valley. Minor protests were reported from some parts of the Valley but the miscreants were chased away by security personnel who resorted to baton charge, the official said.

With internet and mobile networks already suspended, authorities halted cable television, fearing news of protesters’ deaths could fuel further protests after the restive region’s worst violence in years.

Police seized printing plates and thousands of editions overnight on Friday. They also detained scores of printing press workers. The Editors Guild of India in its statement also denounced the media gag in the territory.

A congressional hearing in Washington and the United Nations general assembly were the forums for Pakistan’s public shaming after its representatives tried to rake up the Kashmir situation in the wake of the violence in the Indian state.

Though the valley is stuck in protests, people who need to go to the airport are not hindered.

The journalists also held a protest against the alleged “clampdown” and termed it as an “attack on the freedom of press”.

Indian troops armed with automatic rifles and in riot gear fanned across villages and towns in Kashmir on Friday, ordering residents to stay indoors as a blanket curfew remained in force.

Around 36 people have been killed and 3,100 wounded, majority by police fire, in the worst outbreak of violence in six years in the disputed territory also claimed by India’s arch rival Pakistan.

In Jammu and Kashmir, the curfew and restrictions across Kashmir continued on Monday in view of prevailing law and order situation. “It (pellet guns) shouldn’t be used here or anywhere”.

Condition of all the injured is stated to be stable, he added.
