New homeowner finds dead body in Southern California house

Mary Karacas, 75, is suspected of fatally shooting 84-year-old Salvatore Orefice at a home in the 6200 block of Anastasia Avenue in the eastern end of Simi Valley, authorities said. Roy Jones says the girlfriend, Mary Karacas, admitted to shooting Orefice after an argument, and said the gun she used was in her vehicle.

Simi police were stationed at First Street and Easy Street from 8:00 p.m.to 2:30 a.m., during which time 25 drivers were held for sobriety and other license inspections, according to the Simi Valley Police Depatment.

After hearing from the person who purchased the home, detectives went there and called Karacas – asking that she meet them there, Jones said.

Police said the new homeowner called them to tell them about the discovery of the body.

She was arrested for murder and is now being held at the Ventura County Jail. A murder weapon has been discovered, but it is unknown at this time exactly how long Orefice’s body was left in the bedroom.
