Americans have seen awkward announcements in which presidential candidates have introduced their running mates.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee ended days of intense speculation and political drama on Friday, officially announcing via Twitter that he has chosen Indiana Gov. Mike Pence to be his vice presidential nominee – a decision that pairs up two men whose personalities are day and night.
The formal introduction came a day after the Republican candidate had planned to make it.
Saturday, Trump called pence his “first choice”.
Kennedy, who originally supported Ted Cruz, said the memory of Trump’s consorting with New York Democrats is still too fresh. Many in the media have focused on whether the campaign bungled this moment, but Trump’s strength has been in his ability to get attention by not following the script. Trump was right, though, in that it was far from an enthusiastic endorsement.
Indeed, Trump’s own actions – saying he’d not made a final decision even after Pence was summoned to NY, then delaying the announcement – left the distinct impression of doubt. Pence strongly criticized Trump’s call for travel bans on Muslims, although he did seek to stop a federal Syrian resettlement program in his state and has opposed granting legal status to those who have entered the country illegally.
“He’s honest and he’s sincere but in a amusing way”, said Ida Shelly, 81, Westland, also an alternate delegate for Kasich.
“This is the primary reason I wanted Mike – other than that he looks very good, other than he’s got an incredible family, and incredible wife”, said Trump.
According to a source in the Trump campaign, she was at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey today, practicing her speech for the Republican National Convention in Cleveland this week. “I wish them well”, said Trump of the Turks. The two men, instead of presenting an image of an emboldened, unified front, barely spent any time on stage together, as Trump quickly exited after greeting Pence with a perfunctory handshake and arm pat.
Chris Christie – who himself was on the short list as a potential vice presidential nominee for Donald Trump – praised Trump’s selection of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence for the nomination in a speech to Michigan Republicans on Monday morning.
Lanhee Chen, who advised Romney in 2012, said it was clear that in the Trump-Pence partnership, there would only be one boss.
“When we elect one of the best negotiators in the world as president of the United States, I’m open to renegotiating these trade agreements”, Pence said. Trump did most of the talking during the 21-minute segment that aired on Sunday night, while Pence sat beside him, gazing approvingly and allowing Trump to answer almost all of the questions, even those directed at him. Ted Cruz of Texas during the IN primary.

The US presidential hopeful explained his choice by praising the governor’s fiscally conservative policies and his election in Indiana’s Republican primary, which defied predictions from the party establishment. But he added that the convention gives state Republicans a chance to network and build bridges beyond just the presidential contest.
