A large brush fire broke out in the Hollywood Hills in Los Angeles on Tuesday afternoon.

Shortly after 3 p.m., a Los Angeles Fire Department helicopter spotted the grass fire near northbound U.S. Route 101 and Cahuenga Boulevard, according to LAFD.

Fire officials say no homes were in serious danger.

City fire helicopters were using the nearby reservoir to fill up and drop water on the blaze, and they appeared to be making quick progress.

Traffic on the southbound Hollywood Freeway, not typically a smooth ride during the weekday afternoon rush, was crawling through the area.

The fire caused the 101 Freeway to back-up as motorists slowed down to catch a glimpse of the dramatic flames. “The fuels are ready to burn”, Los Angeles Fire Department Deputy Chief Charles Butler explained.

The smoke from the fire was visible from across much of central Los Angeles.

Downed power lines were creating a hazard for responding firefighters, she said.
