Sponsored locations soon in Pokémon Go

Despite being free-to-play, with a base of players surpassing 21 million active users in the United States alone, the sales for in-app-purchases is generating plenty of revenue. The game seems to be adding on more players every day, and it is possible that more time than the noted 33 minutes is being spent on the app as of now.

“To make this as a spot in a game, I think that’s wrong”, said Mickey Kennedy, 61, a native New Yorker who visited the site Tuesday. Niantic, Inc., the makers of Pokémon Go, issued a statement saying that it erroneously requested such permission from some iOS users, but Pokémon Go “only accesses basic Google profile information (specifically, your User ID and email address)”.

“Four male suspects in St. Louis, Mo., activated a lure module within the game and drew players to a secluded parking lot, where they allegedly robbed 11 players at gunpoint”, the report says.

The game now populates “Pokéstops” and “gyms”, real-world locations that users physically have to navigate to in order to play the game, using points of interest in Google Maps.

While there is no confirmation of a specific partnership for Pokemon Go yet, some have noticed references to “McDonalds” in the game’s code for what appears to be the sponsorships feature.

Pokémon Go has achieved unprecedented success in the mobile games market. This isn’t an app that gets you idly wandering around the town, either.
