AJC: Iran Nuclear Deal Side Agreement Deeply Troubling

Hundreds turned out for a protest in Los Angeles against the Iran nuclear deal, July 26, 2015. “They literally know nothing”.

“Whether the original deal truly can prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons capability always was uncertain, despite the 15 years of restrictions on, and monitoring of, Iranian nuclear research and development”, Harris said. “It’s difficult to renege on major treaties negotiated under a previous administration, but the next administration must think long and hard about how to unwind this disaster”. These upgraded centrifuges are up to five times more efficient than Iran’s current equipment, and would allow the Islamic Republic to enrich uranium twice as fast as it is now.

“While it is for the Security Council to interpret its own resolutions, I am concerned that those ballistic missile launches are not consistent with the constructive spirit demonstrated by the signing of the [nuclear agreement]”, Ban wrote in the 17-page report.

“The US that once said Arak’s heavy water reactor should be destroyed, has not only accepted the heavy water reactor but also purchases heavy water from Iran today and contributes a role in efforts to redesign it”, he added during a meeting with university and school students in Tehran, according to the semi-official Fars news agency. The United States has been far too lenient in allowing Iran benefits beyond those required by the Iran Deal, as well as failing to impose strong measures to hold Iran accountable for continued behavior that violates the tenets of the agreement. “We understand that Iran also disagrees strongly with parts of the report”, U.S. Ambassador Samantha Power told the U.N. Security Council.

Russian Ambassador Vitaly Churkin called the report “politically motivated” and said it contained factual errors.

“Some of the provisions of the Secretary-General’s report have no relation to his mandate, nor to the terms of reference of [the U.N.] resolution or the [nuclear deal]”, Churkin said.

The report by the United Nations secretary general claims that Iran’s ballistic missile launches “are not consistent with the constructive spirit” of the deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Netanyahu expanded on this theme during a speech in the Knesset marking the 10th anniversary of the Second Lebanon War. “And these are not only words, but actions repeated time and time again to back up our red lines”.
