Local officials, family and university staff have been unable to track down Nick Leslie, a 20-year-old junior in the school’s College of Natural Resources.

Alberto Carlos Leslie, his uncle, asked for prayers for Nicolas’s parents, who had been expecting to find him in Nice – perhaps injured, but alive.

A United States university student missing since the Bastille Day attack in Nice has been confirmed as one of the dead.

Leslie is now a junior at UC Berkeley, majoring in the College of Natural Resources.

“We are devastated, people are very upset, it’s unbelievable”, UC Berkeley spokeswoman Claire Holmes said.

“As in any case where a USA citizen is reported missing, we are in close touch with the family and working intensively to coordinate with French authorities to locate the individual”, the spokesman said.

All four were among 85 participants in a summer entrepreneurship program near Nice.

The father of 20-year-old Nicolas “Nick” Leslie, who was missing after the attack, said late Friday morning that he is hopeful his son will be found safe soon.

“Some people saw him escape”.

But he said if a surge of new immigrants trying to “beat the deadline” floods into Britain before it leaves the European Union, the Conservative government may have to set a cutoff date. “The guess seems to be that he is OK”. “He’s a great guy, we’re optimistic”. According to his Facebook page, Leslie was originally from Italy, but grew up in Del Mar, California.

The vigil is set for 4:30 p.m.at Sproul Plaza. That radio silence is odd for someone who has been snapchatting – or “streaking”, as its often called – relentlessly over the course of his vacation. “We would have been there when the attack happened, but chose to go back to our hotel just a few minutes away to get my jacket before we headed to dinner further down the promenade. But then I took one look at you laughing, and it brought me an awed warmth that allowed me to do nothing more than shake my head and smile back”.

Of the unidentified students who were injured, two suffered broken legs and the other has a broken foot, according to a university spokesman.

The program has been suspended for the national three days of mourning and will continue through its planned end date on July 24.

Three students on a study overseas program in France were in Nice during Thursday’s Bastille Day attack.
