Amir takes last wicket as Pakistan beat England by 75 runs

England were holding firm at 195 for six thanks to a determined stand of 56 between Jonny Bairstow (48) and Chris Woakes (23).

Needed to chase 283 here at Lord’s (eclipsing the 282 overhauled against New Zealand in 2004) England certainly kept the crowd interested.

If England achieve their target in this match, it would be the second-highest such chase in a Lord’s Test behind the West Indies’ 344 for one back in 1984.

A ball after Gary Ballance had pulled him for four, Yasir bowled the recalled left-hander behind his legs for 43 with a delivery that spun out of the rough.

Moeen Ali (right) was bowled after an extravagant, yet ultimately unsuccessful, charge to leg-spinner Yasir Shah. Shah had taken two wickets for two runs in six balls and England were 139 for six.

Rahat Ali took three top-order wickets; then Yasir (four for 69) had his predictable say too, and Mohammad Amir appropriately helped finish the job as a succession of batsmen failed to decide between attack and defence and struggled for a winning tempo.

Cook hinted that England would use the sight of Pakistan’s jubilant post-match frolics as motivation for the second Test at Old Trafford, which starts on Friday, although the lack of batting nous was the principal cause of his anger.

Pakistan began their second innings on Saturday after England were all-out for 272 on day three of the first Test against Pakistan at the Lord’s Cricket Ground on Saturday.

The left-arm fast bowler would have dismissed Cook much earlier, but slip Mohammad Hafeez and wicket-keeper Sarfraz Ahmed dropped the opener off his bowling when the Englishman was on 22 and 55 respectively.

England trail by 86 runs with three wickets in hand.

Joe Root struck two superb cover-driven fours off Rahat but the star batsman fell into a hooking trap on nine when he paddled a Rahat short ball to Shah, set back at deep square leg.

James Vince (42) got a lucky escape on 9 before lunch when Younis Khan couldn’t grasp a hard low catch on his second attempt in the slips off Ali before Younis caught him – again on the second attempt – soon after lunch off Wahab Riaz.

With Yasir Shah and Muhammad Amir in the crease with 30 and 0 runs respectively, Pakistan still has two wickets in hand and would try to score as many as they could to put maximum pressure on England while chasing in their second innings.

This match also saw England paceman Chris Woakes take Test-best match figures of 11 for 102.

Amir finished with 1-65 but showed that he still has the ability to bowl over and round the wicket and, with strong fingers and wrist, coax the ball either way in the air.

Alastair Cook-led England were bamboozled by Pakistan, who despite not being the best team on paper, proved what sheer determination can do.
