Tuesday’s shooting came after police responded to a report around 1:30 p.m. from a person who said several people in a auto were firing shots. He was pronounced dead at the University of Kansas Hospital.
A Kansas City, Kansas, police captain has died following a shooting early Tuesday afternoon, according to multiple sources.
EMS rushed Captain Melton to a local trauma center, but they were unable to review him.
“This is a very tense and volatile time in our community and our nation”.
“We ask everyone to be just prayerful”, Holland was quoted by KCTV.
Fox 4 reported that already “people from around the community were already seen bringing food to the police station and offering their support and condolences at this hard time”.
Melton, 46, had been on the police force for almost 17 years, and was promoted to captain in May 2015, the news station notes. A firefighter even added a shirt off his own back and the KCK fire department brought Minsky’s pizza to police working Tuesday night.
The shooting happened after police responded to a report around 1:30 p.m. from a person who said several people in a vehicle were firing shots.
This is second time in less than three months that a Kansas City, Kansas, police officer was shot and killed. Melton and other officers started chasing the suspects.
Before Captain Robert Melton could get out of his vehicle, he was shot multiple times by suspects in Kansas City.
Melton was a police lieutenant with the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office from November 1990 – December 1999, later joining the KCKPD as a patrol officer from December 1999 – November 2006. “We all are”, Kansas City, Missouri, police said in a statement.
Police confirmed that there are two suspects, and that one is still at large.
A spokesman for the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says the agency has about 20 agents on the scene of a fatal shooting of a Kansas City, Kansas, officer.
