Duke’s Rowbury qualifies for third-straight Olympic Games

McLaughlin’s time of 54.14 was a junior world record. Between the New Balance Nationals in N.C., the U.S. Junior Championships in Clovis, Calif., where she won to qualify for World Juniors, and the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., McLaughlin has been away from her Dunellen home since June 21, and has spent just one day at home since June 16.

“I just want to say thank you to everyone who encouraged me through this whole journey, ” Ostrander said. “My coach told me it was gonna be a fast time, I didn’t know it was gonna be that fast”.

McLaughlin joins victor Dalilah Muhammad and runner-up Ashley Spencer on the team headed to Rio.

NJ.com dished in a separate report that Sydney McLaughlin, the fast-rising track & field star, is turning 17 years old on August 7, two days after the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro opens. Kerron Clement (48.50), Byron Robinson (48.79) and Michael Tinsley (48.82) were Team USA’s Olympic qualifiers in the event.

In the women’s 5,000 meters, it wouldn’t have mattered if Molly Huddle celebrated this one early as she finished well ahead of the pack.

Decathlete Ashton Eaton, long jumper Brittney Reese, pole vaulter Jenn Suhr and triple jumper Christian Taylor will all defend their Olympic titles from 2012, while Olympic 200m champion Allyson Felix moves up in distance to the 400m, the event in which she won the world title previous year.

Her hopes of becoming only the third woman to win both the 400m and 200m at the same Olympics ended in an agonising defeat in the shorter race. Now ranked No. 20 in the world for the 400-meter, McQuay, 26, helped the United States to the silver medal in the 4×400 at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Ostrander broke the Mountain West record in the event by crossing the line in 15 minutes, 24.74 seconds.

Tori Bowie and Deajah Stevens, together with Prandini, will contest the women’s 200m for the United States in Rio. Runner-up Sandi Morris and third-place finisher Alexis Weeks also qualified for a spot on the Olympic team.

McLaughlin, a rising senior at Union Catholic in Scotch Plains, New Jersey, said she had a panic attack before the race began. The year’s fastest men’s 400 meters hurdler faded to fifth in the closing stretchg to miss clinching a place in the U.S. team.
