Liam Smith confident of upsetting the odds against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez

Mexican boxing fans are loyal but they do not like to see their heroes avoid big fights and some may turn their backs on Alvarez for the move, even though he is likely to face Golovkin next year if they both go unbeaten for 12 months.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya says the reason why Golden Boy’s flagship fighter Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 KOs) is fighting WBO junior middleweight champion Liam Smith (23-0-1, 13 KOs) on September 17 rather than the other junior middleweight champions is that he feels that Smith is the “best champion at 154 pounds”.

The opinions of experts and bookmakers are of little effect to the Liverpudlian’s trainer, though, and Gallagher is confident Alvarez and his team will live to regret their decision to postpone a showdown with middleweight king Golovkin.

The hard nosed British fighter is now trained by Ring Magazine’s “2015 Trainer of the Year”, Joe Gallagher, who has cultivated an impressive and versatile skill set in his young champion.

Will Liam Smith prove to be a much tougher match-up than most are anticipating? Liam Smith is undefeated against a cast of spares and nobodies. “Having Canelo Alvarez, one of the best fighters in the world, in this stadium will be a thrill for not only the fans of North Texas but also for boxing fans around the world”. I feel they should have taken the GGG (Gennady Golovkin) fight and got paid well.

“They’re both good punchers”.

‘The best man will win and the loser will go back to Mexico’.

“I’m looking forward to Liam Smith going over there and giving Saul Alvarez huge problems on the night. Liam Smith’s chest was rising, puffing out [when he arrived in the stadium]”. Sooner or later, the boxing public is going to catch on and figure out that Golden Boy isn’t putting Canelo in with the top fighters. I’m going there to make a name for myself, not really in America but in the world of boxing. “I think it shows just how important pressure is at winning football games”. “If I don’t stop him, it won’t be for the lack of trying”. I’m not changing my mentality. Not only that, but he is fighting a world champion who is unsafe, who is not going to the USA to fall, a fighter who is serious, who is much bigger than Canelo. I’ll cherish every bit of it.

I know what you’re thinking.

“I’m stepping up to this level and time will tell whether I’m at that level”.
