“We had a strong second quarter and are well positioned as we look forward to combining with Dell to establish the world’s largest privately-controlled, integrated technology company”, said Joe Tucci, EMC’s chairman and CEO, in a company statement.
Shareholders of EMC Corp. today overwhelmingly voted in favor of the company’s planned merger with Dell Inc. – a more than $60 billion transaction that’s been described as the biggest tech deal in history.
The deal will also let Dell exploit a product category pioneered by EMC, known as converged infrastructure, to sell computing, storage and networking equipment as an easy-to-install bundle.
This approval is one of the final hurdles that Dell needs to overcome after acquiring a regulatory green light for the acquisition from the European Union at the end of February.
“The board and I care very deeply about, and have worked diligently to represent, what we believe is the best outcome for all stakeholders”, he said. “My special thanks to the talented people of EMC for their hard work, dedication and passion”.
EMC shares were up 1% as of Tuesday morning. The PC business will retain the Dell moniker, while the enterprise unit in which EMC will sit will be referred to as Dell EMC.
The newly combined entity, to be named Dell Technologies, aims to be a one-stop shop for information technology sold to businesses.
