Rory McIlroy grouped with Jordan Spieth, Zach Johnson at PGA

The U.S. loss was painful. He had the 36-hole lead at St. Andrews until a 75-75 finish. Dustin Johnson had a one-shot lead playing the final hole when he set his 4-iron in sand that he thought was the base of a dead patch of grass.

McIlroy’s last competitive round was a closing 66 in the US Open at Chambers Bay.

Tiger Woods is with Keegan Bradley and Martin Kaymer, who won the last time the PGA was at Whistling Straits. He at least has a victory in the last month, meaning his form might not be too far away.

That’s assuming he plays next week at Whistling Straits, and the world’s No. 1 player added another strong indicator yesterday.

That threesome has accounted for the last five majors.

McIlroy is absent from the Bridgestone Invitational this week, but has been on everyone’s mind because of his Instagram posts this week showing he is healthy enough to work out and swing a club. Matt Kuchar tied for 10th to earn the final spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team, bumping out Anthony Kim…. In the three-hole playoff, Singh opened with a birdie and the others couldn’t catch up. The irritation over that putt might be evidence that the Aussie is ready to break through in a major.

The bigger question is how he will play. A re-examination yielded 1,012, and all of them will play as true bunkers – just as they did in 2010. And that has proved to be his greatest challenge.

AKRON, Ohio – Rory McIlroy joins the marquee group of this year’s major champions in the opening rounds of the PGA Championship. “Generally on a golf course, people are not standing in a bunker”. So it doesn’t make it any easier, and we’re going to have to work really hard for it. But all that will be on my mind is that it’s the PGA Championship.

2015 majors: Masters-T2, US Open-T64, British Open-T20. He has shown evidence of good play at a few regular PGA Tour events, though he hasn’t come close to putting together a solid week. The list seems to be getting longer for the best player to have never won a major. He dominated golf headlines this summer after winning the Masters and U.S. Open and then missing out on a playoff at the British Open by one shot.

How the young American would love to turn up on the first tee with the rankings bragging rights over an opponent who would not have played for 53 days, since coming ninth at a US Open in which Spieth, himself, finished first.
