Mario Gomez leaves Besiktas because of political situation

Turkey on Wednesday intensified a sweeping crackdown on the media, the military, the courts and the education system following an attempted coup, targeting tens of thousands of teachers and other state employees for dismissal in a purge that raised concerns about basic freedoms and the effectiveness of key institutions.

Gomez scored twice for Germany at the European Championships this summer but missed the semi-final tie against France due to injury.

Loic Remy will be targeted by Besiktas should the Turkish side fail to complete a permanent deal for Mario Gomez. Though the attempt was squashed just later, Gomez, who played for Germany at Euro 2016 this summer, called his decision to leave “difficult”.

He said: “Last year was very hard for me because I had a lot of injuries, but this is a new page now. It is purely down to the bad events that happened in the last few days”, he added.

Gomez put an end to his chapter at Besiktas today citing the political instability in the country as his reason behind the decision. I hope to stay free from injuries and to have a better season. I huge thanks to the club, to you fans and to all the people with whom my family and I had a lot of wonderful times! I hope that these political problems can be solved in a peaceful manner soon.

For Besiktas, the loss of Gomez is a major blow, as the German played an instrumental role in the club’s first league title in seven years. The club and the country grew very close to my heart in this past year.
