‘Pretty Woman’ filmmaker Garry Marshall dies at age 81
“Rest dear one. We love you”. He carried on, right up to and including “Mother’s Day”, the third in his holiday ensemble movies, preceded by the highly profitable “Valentine’s Day” and “New Year’s Eve”. We lost a lovely man & masterful story teller. For example: And also, Garry Marshall directed Overboard! I went outside and sat in the absurd blue-white bath of moon, surprised to see my night shadow. I loved “Pretty Woman“, and probably always will. At the tender, impressionable age of 8, I fell for Julia Roberts tossing her big red hair and her declaration to Richard Gere that she “wanted the fairytale”. And in the end, Kirk can only surrender, because one man cannot fight a whole town of people who are willing to stand up to him. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, and his three children, Kathleen, Scott and Lori. “Even at 81 he had a record this year of 6-1 pitching for his team”.

Marshall broke into showbiz in the late 1950s as a joke writer, eventually earning his way to becoming a writer on The Tonight Show with Jack Paar.
He soon progressed to writing scripts for a series of hit TV shows and caught the eye of comedian Joey Bishop, who took him to Los Angeles to write for The Joey Bishop Show.
Born and raised in The Bronx, Marshall moved to L.A.to write for such ’60s sitcoms as “The Dick Van Dyke Show“, and he was a longtime resident of Toluca Lake, where he often hosted basketball games for his casts, crews and Hollywood friends.
The conversion of 1970 Broadway show “The Odd Couple” into a sitcom marked the beginning of a TV sitcom enterprise for Marshall, who served as producer. In the 1970s, several of his projects highlighted the talents of his younger sister, Penny Marshall, whose title role on Laverne & Shirley gave momentum to her successful career as a director and producer.
In the mid 80s, Marshall shifted his focus to films, releasing The Flamingo Kid starring Matt Dillon in 1984. Other actors, from Rob Lowe and Jason Alexander to Alyssa Milano, also were crediting him with helping their early careers, posting tributes to Marshall. “He did these films that had heart – they were amusing, but they also had great dramatic moments, too”.
“A great, great guy and the best casino boss in the history of film”, actor-filmmaker Brooks posted on Twitter. It was a chance to watch Williams do his schtick for a half-hour every week, and Marshall saw the value in that.
Two years later, in 1990, Marshall really hit the motherlode with Pretty Woman.
“Garry was a uniquely creative force”, said Most.

“Garry Marshall hired me at 15 years old”, Rob Lowe tweeted”. They aren’t Get Smart or The Bob Newhart Show or other “smart” shows that have more in common with what discerning, choosy comedy minds of this modern era laud.
