But there were unmistakable similarities between her remarks and a speech given by Michelle Obama at the 2008 Democratic convention.

As the convention got underway Monday, hundreds of people assembled in downtown Cleveland to protest presumptive GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who is slated to speak on Tuesday, told NBC’s Today, “93 percent of the speech is completely different” from the speech Mrs. Obama delivered, but added the two women “expressed some common thoughts”. “In writing her lovely speech, Melania’s team of writers took notes on her life’s inspirations, and in some instances included fragments that reflected her own thinking”, Trump spokesman Jason Miller said. He expects even better security this week.

Trump’s supporters and his opponents held rallies outside the convention hall Monday and are expected to resume on Tuesday. And they cast the turbulent times as a direct result of weak leadership by President Barack Obama and Clinton, who spent four years in the administration.

Carson says Clinton would appoint liberal Supreme Court justices who would cement those policies. She says no one appears to be taking them up on it.

But with that drama out of the way, and Trump’s selection of Indiana Gov. Mike Pence for vice president made official on Friday, convention-goers can focus on the speeches, balloon-dropping and pomp and circumstance that often define the event. “We knew it was going to be close”.

Donald Trump Jr. told delegates about his father’s business acumen and said that for his father, “impossible is just the starting point”. Many GOP leaders, party elders and rising stars have steered clear of Cleveland, wary of being linked to the nominee.

Notable GOP politicians will be absent from the events in Cleveland.

After the votes, Patrick confirmed that Texas was not among the states that submitted a petition to force a rules vote.

A woman tries to grab the camera of a man filming reporters during a rally in support of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump near the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. Such a move would presumably help a party favorite like Cruz, who lose to the outsider Trump this year.

Hillary Clinton’s campaign is launching a major voter mobilization drive during the Republican National Convention. The mother of one of the victims choked back tears as she personally blamed Clinton for her son’s death and accused her of giving a false explanation for the attack.

“I’m not happy about that, but again, we’re not voting for Hillary Clinton”.

The convention comes amid a wrenching period of violence and unrest, both in the United States and around the world.

This was not a movement necessarily to deny Trump the nomination.

As usual in this unpredictable convention, the list of speakers includes some unusual names, including Andy Wist, founder and CEO of a waterproofing company in the Bronx, as well as Dana White, president of the popular Ultimate Fighting Championship, which promotes mixed martial arts and features top-ranked fighters in the sport. They included Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa and Sen.

After her speech, Donald Trump praised his wife on Twitter, “Her speech and demeanor were absolutely incredible”.

Cleveland Police Chief Calvin Williams waded into crowds of demonstrators during the day, warning one group, “It’s an unlawful gathering. He’s a very valued member of the Republican team here”.

Manafort spoke at a Bloomberg breakfast, repeating an earlier comment in which he said Kasich is, “embarrassing” Ohio.

“There’s a political tint to this whole issue”, Manafort said.

Some rebellious delegates threatened to walk out if they are thwarted.

In a brief interview with The Associated Press, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich – who Trump considered as a running mate – said of the insurrection, “It’s silly”.
