The sharp rise in supporters is an apparent boost for Corbyn, after a spokesman for the Opposition leader said it was “reasonable to assume” that the vast majority of supporters back him as party leader.

The former shadow business secretary withdrew “in the interests of the party” after she received fewer nominations from MPs and MEPs than her Welsh colleague. Corbyn and his challenger Owen Smith will spend the summer campaigning against one another for the leadership.
Ms Peake appeared alongside Mr Corbyn at a rally and then spoke on a promotional film for the party leader as the deadline for registering to vote in the leadership election nears.
Kerry McCarthy, MP for Bristol East, was at the former shadow work and pensions secretary campaign launch on the weekend and confirmed that she believes Mr Smith has the ability to connect with people beyond those who “already agree with him”.
Following the June 23 referendum result, which saw Britain voting to leave the bloc, 23 of the 31 shadow cabinet members resigned their roles, forcing the leadership challenge.
In a poll this week, it was suggested that Mr Corbyn would comfortably beat him with 56 per cent of the grassroot membership still backing the incumbent.
The leadership vote is also open to the party’s 380,000-plus members who signed up before January 12 and affiliated supporters from unions and other organisations.
There were echoes of Margaret Thatcher, as Mrs May took Mr Corbyn to task after he said that “six years of Government austerity” had failed. Smith told Sky News television he fears the party may split if Corbyn holds on to the leadership.
May also came out on top in her first clash with Jeremy Corbyn, in particular when the Labour leader to highlight the plight of workers with little job security.
“I want to say to all members of the Labour party tonight, young and old, longstanding and new members, I can be their champion”.
Corbyn, who surprised many political pundits by being elected Labour party leader last September, has been caught in a bitter power struggle between the party’s left wing and more moderate factions.

“Over the coming weeks, I look forward to listening and speaking to as many members and supporters as possible, to set out my radical vision for Labour’s future”.
