Marshall is best known for launching many actors’ careers through his hits like Pretty Woman, The Princess Diaries, Beaches, and more.

One other thing to should note – although not necessarily a career high – Marshall is on the record admitting that it was HIS idea to have Fonzie JUMP THE SHARK on “Happy Days”. “Thank you for my professional life”, he wrote shortly after news broke.

Garry, who was a former journalist, first found success in 1970 when he and his writing partner turned the Broadway show The Odd Couple into a TV series.

Nominated for five Emmys, he is survived by his wife Barbara Sue Marshall, whom he was married to for 53 years, as well as his two sisters (including director-producer-actress Penny Marshall), three children and six grandchildren.

Director Garry Marshall arrives as a guest at the 19th Annual ELLE Women in Hollywood dinner in Beverly Hills, Calif., on October 15, 2012.

His credits also included 2010’s romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, which had an ensemble cast including Jessica Alba, Ashton Kutcher, Bradley Cooper and Taylor Swift, and Mother’s Day, starring Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts and Kate Hudson, which was released in April. We lost a attractive man & masterful story teller.

“Garry Marshall was everything one could hope in a family man and talented artist who LOVED his life and art”, Jaime Lee Curtis posted on Twitter.

Even when his films were no longer acclaimed, Marshall was still regarded as one of the industry’s true nice guys and best storytellers; for a taste of that, check out his recent interview on WTF with Marc Maron. Thank you Gary for Overboard and all the films you made that had humanity, humour and goodness that lifted our spirits.

Marshall began his career in the 1960s by selling jokes to comedians.
