The surround roads have been closed and a major police operation is underway.

He has been taken to nearby Westmead Hospital and will be questioned later.

A perimeter was established around the station in the western suburb of Merrylands as a precaution, police said.

Specialist officers wearing helmets and holding shields are at the scene, dog squad officers, and plainclothes police wearing bulletproof vests are patrolling the scene, according to The Sydney Morning Herald. The man was arrested by officers about 8pm.

No police officers or members of the public were injured during the incident, according to NSW Police.

These are the first pictures dropping from the scene.

The vehicle he was driving was said to be laden with gas cylinders which could explode.

The cylinders are not believed to have exploded.

There are no other reported injuries.
