Chris Christie puts Hillary Clinton on trial, convention crowd finds her guilty

Trump himself never seems short of words to talk about how great he is.

The vote came on the second day of the Cleveland convention, where the theme was billed as “Make America Work Again”.

Police worked to break up scuffles between groups of demonstrators a few blocks from the Republican National Convention Tuesday afternoon and evening.

“If you think Chris Christie can lecture anyone on ethics, we have a bridge to sell you”, she wrote.

This week’s four-day convention is Trump’s highest-profile opportunity to convince voters that he’s better suited for the presidency than Clinton, who will be nominated at next week’s Democratic gathering. “So if you’re a Republican and you’re not voting for Trump, you’re voting for Hillary”, Christie said, as if addressing Bush.

While it was Trump’s night, Clinton was frequently the focus.

After delivering a 60-second opener full of praise of Donald Trump, Christie moved to prosecute a case against Clinton’s “dismal record” as secretary of state.

Party officials hope to use the convention to smooth out some of Trump’s rough edges and present him as a job creator and a strong hand to combat security threats at home and overseas.

“This is a movement, but we have to go all the way”, he said.

The convention also has been marred by protests from anti-Trump delegates and a controversy over a speech by Trump’s wife, Melania, that included a section that was strikingly similar to a portion of the speech given by Michelle Obama at the Democratic convention in 2008 when her husband, Barack Obama, was seeking his first term as president. There were no big missteps Tuesday, but the event was void of the glitzy, Hollywood touch Trump promised, with a series of Republican officials parading on stage to level sharp, but repetitive, criticisms of Clinton.

Trump’s family again took center stage, underscoring the campaign’s urgent task to reshape the image of a candidate seen by large swaths of voters as harsh and divisive.

“For my father, impossible is just the starting point”, said Donald Trump Jr., the oldest of the Republican nominee’s five children.

Within weeks of announcing his candidacy at Trump Tower in NY on June 16, 2015, Trump had taken a commanding lead in the Republican race, defying pundits who were quick to write him off and eclipsing the man many had thought would be crowned on Tuesday night – former Florida Governor Jeb Bush, part of a Republican political dynasty.

“Let’s compete in every part of America, and turn out at the polls like every last vote matters, because it will”, Ryan said.

Clinton has led in the poll most of the year.

A number of top Republicans are sitting out the convention. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who has been a lukewarm supporter of Trump, was greeted with a smattering of boos as he took the stage.

The roll call vote of states gave Trump enough delegates at the Republican National Convention to win the nomination after months of speculation and dissent among the GOP ranks.

Trump was put over the top by his home state of NY. Four of his children joined the state’s delegation on the convention floor for the historic moment and appeared overwhelmed with emotion.

“She said there was no marked classified information on her server”.

Vice presidential pick Mike Pence, the IN governor who left Indianapolis for Cleveland on Monday, is set to speak Wednesday, with Trump scheduled to close the convention with an acceptance speech Thursday night.

But her speech was quickly overtaken by charges that it included two passages— each 30 words or longer — that matched a 2008 Democratic convention address by Michelle Obama almost word-for-word.

Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort called the criticism “just absurd” and said the issue had been “totally blown out of proportion”.

Clinton said the first day of the Republican gathering had been “surreal”, comparing it to the classic fantasy film “Wizard of Oz”.

Pat McPherson, a Nebraska delegate, said it was important to highlight Clinton’s flaws to unite Republicans.

Trump Jr., in what was the most well-received speech of the night, touched on a wide range of topics, from his relationship with his father to Trump’s business background and economic message, immigration, gun rights, the attack in Benghazi and Clinton’s negatives.
