Ted Cruz booed as he refuses to endorse Trump

Jim Walsh from CT watches as Sen. Donald Trump Jr., son of Republican Presidential nominee Donald Trump, makes a fist as he leaves the stage after addressing delegates during the second day of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Tuesday, July 19. Ted Cruz was partially booed off stage at the Republican National Convention after declining to endorse Donald Trump and instead encouraging Americans to “vote your conscience” during a speech to delegates. Republicans likely won’t conclude without a fresh round of reminders about why they think she’d be a disaster as president.

A Cruz adviser who asked to remain anonymous said Cruz had anticipated a backlash from the crowd if he did not endorse Trump.

“He is a man known for having a large personality, a colorful style, and lots of charisma”, Pence said of Trump.

At a rally with some 900 delegates, donors, GOP officials and supporters at a lakeside restaurant, Cruz never mentioned Trump’s name during an appearance billed as a “thank you” event for supporters.

Several prominent figures within the party are skipping the convention, including Sen.

“And to those listening: Please, don’t stay home in November”. The Texas senator urged them to vote for the candidate who will best protect the Constitution, Gingrich said, before adding: “In this election, there is only one candidate who will uphold the Constitution”.

Later, former House speaker Newt Gingrich tried to calm down delegates by saying that some had “misunderstood” Cruz.

“I am deeply humbled by your confidence”, Pence told delegates, still reeling from a night of high drama and political infighting over Trump’s anointment as the party’s White House candidate. The Republican ticket would win, he said, because the American people were exhausted of watching “a mountain range of debt” build up, exhausted of being told “this is as good as it gets” and quoting Ronald Reagan, “tired of being told that a ‘little intellectual elite in a far-distant capital can plan our lives better for us than we can plan them for ourselves'”.

For much of the speech, Trump looked on from the VIP area with a solemn look on his race, perhaps digesting what had happened with Cruz, but he rose to applaud as Eric Trump made a strong case as to why his father should be president. After the speech, we’ve definitely learned more about what Mike is all about, especially when he started talking about Hillary Clinton. “These votes had nothing to do with Trump”, he said.

He called presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton the “secretary of the status quo”, referring to her former job as secretary of state. “He’s a doer in a game usually reserved for talkers”, the vice presidential nominee continued. They crowded around him 10 people deep on a sunny outdoor restaurant deck after his 20-minute speech, chanting “2020, 2020, 2020!”

Goldman said he voted for Florida Sen.

Pence, 57, said he “joined this campaign in a heartbeat” because Republicans nominated Trump, a man “who never quits, who never backs down”.

“I think he blew the value of his speech”, Joe Kasper, a NY delegate, said.

Meanwhile, Trump’s campaign was still trying to quiet a plagiarism controversy involving Melania Trump’s convention address two nights earlier.

A convention speech delivered by Melania Trump is dominating the news for a third day. “I meant it then and I mean it now”, Waker said.

In a statement issued by the campaign, McIver said Mrs. Trump had told her that she admired Mrs. Obama, and had read passages from Obama’s speech as an example of things she liked.

She offered her resignation, but Trump declined, telling her “people make innocent mistakes”, she wrote.

“For risking America’s secrets to keep her own – guilty”, Christie said.
