Veep leads the comedy series nominations with 17.
Fantasy drama “Game of Thrones” has received 23 Emmy nominations, one more than its closest rival, the crime series “The People vs. OJ Simpson”.
Game of Thrones will compete in a seven-way race for best drama with Showtime’s Central Intelligence Agency thriller Homeland, FX’s Cold War espionage saga The Americans, AMC’s quirky legal story Better Call Saul, the final season of PBS’s period melodrama Downton Abbey, Netflix’s political mystery House of Cards, and USA Network’s new computer-hacking tale Mr. Robot.
First year series, “Mr. Robot” was also nominated along with “The Americans”, “Better Call Saul“, and “House Of Cards“. Even though that’s 32 fewer than it earned a year ago, it still is a dominant performance, as “Game of Thrones” earned 23 total nods, the most of any program on TV.
David Schwimmer, who played Simpson’s lawyer and friend Robert Kardashian, John Travolta, who portrayed defence lawyer Robert Shapiro, and Sterling K Brown, who played prosecutor Christopher Darden, are also nominated for best supporting actor in a limited series.
It’s a category that’s crowded with British talent – Idris Elba is in there for Luther, and Benedict Cumberbatch has been nominated for Sherlock.
“Black-ish” faces last year’s victor “Veep” and its star Julia Louis Dreyfus.
Others included both Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright for House of Cards; Aziz Ansari for Master of None; Kyle Chandler for the drama Bloodline; Rami Malek for Mr Robot; Lily Tomlin for Grace and Frankie plus Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt’s Ellie Kemper. The series won 12 Emmys in all at last year’s show after earning a field-leading 24 nominations. In the performance categories, other TV films and limited series to get nominations are American Horror Story (Kathy Bates and Sarah Paulson) and Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill (Audra McDonald).
Beyonce’s film “Lemonade” took two nominations, with the singer receiving a personal nod for her directing work.
Five-time best comedy victor “Modern Family” was once again nominated. FX follows with 56 bids, Netflix with 54, NBC with 41 and ABC with 35.
