Sneak peek: ‘Lego Batman Movie’ reveals Joker, Robin

Expect to see more Lego Batman Movie at Comic-Con this week, but here’s a first look at the characters in the movie beyond Will Arnett’s silly Dark Knight. Now, some brand new images have been released.

Nipping at the heels (cape?) of yesterday’s Comic-Con promo that was, unsurprisingly, all about the Caped Crusader, USA Today has premiered a handful of pics for The LEGO Batman Movie that unveil both Robin (Michael Cera) and Zach Galifianakis’ wicked Clown Prince of Crime.

Suicide Squad is showing more extreme live action versions of Batman, the Joker and Harley Quinn soon, yet The Lego Batman Movie is going back to basics with them for a more family friendly crowd.

Director Chris McKay’s description of the villain also happens to offer some choice plot details; as he explained, “The Joker sees himself on the same level as Batman, a peer, at the top of the game”. The film was written by McKay, Erik Sommers and Seth Grahame-Smith and produced by The LEGO Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller.

A Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, The LEGO Batman Movie //em will open in theaters on February 10, 2017.

For this, Lego Batman voice Will Arnett is reunited with his Arrested Development nephew Michael Cera, who McKay says “brings the sweetness and honesty”.

However, Robin is enough of a handful on his own for Batman, especially once he modifies a “Reggae Man costume” with a very distracting cape.

McKay went on to make a fascinating comparison, saying that “LEGO Batman is About a Boy as directed by Michael Mann”, in that Wayne is a single bachelor who suddenly has to take care of a child. But there are big changes brewing in Gotham, and if he wants to save the city from The Joker’s hostile takeover, Batman may have to drop the lone vigilante thing, try to work with others and maybe, just maybe, learn to lighten up.
